Wellington burglary victims get good news

Clever Police work has led to the discovery of several stolen items, linked to a spate of Wellington burglaries in recent weeks.

As Police executed a search warrant on a Wellington address this week in relation to another matter, a large amount of stolen property was recovered, which has been traced back to burglaries committed in the Karori, Northland, Johnsonville and Aro Valley suburbs.

Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard says Police have recovered several laptops, i-pods, digital cameras, jewellery, credit cards, foreign currency and even a 52 inch television yesterday.

"We have been able to trace the stolen items back to half a dozen burglaries committed over the past five weeks. We've contacted the victims of these crimes who are delighted we have managed to recover some of their precious belongings."

She says it's always a nice change for Police to be the bearer of good news as it's not always the case, given the nature of Policing.

DSS Howard says it's important to note that the burglaries were all committed during the day, between the hours of 9am and 6pm.

"It's a timely reminder to Wellington residents to ensure they secure their premises well every time they go out, making sure windows and doors are locked. Burglar alarms and dogs also deter would-be burglars."

Anyone who sees any suspicious activity in their neighbourhood should not hesitate to phone Police immediately. Joining or establishing a Neighbourhood Support group is also another proactive way to protect yourself and your property.

Police are speaking to a person in connection with the stolen property.
