Waikato Civil Defence on weather alert

Waikato Civil Defence is urging the region’s residents to be on the alert for rising river levels and high winds generally, and heavy ocean swells on the west coast, over the next few days.

“We urge people to bear in mind the dangers posed by the weather conditions,” said Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group controller Clayton Stent.

Civil Defence in the Waikato Valley Emergency Operating Area, whose area includes Hamilton and the west coast, is closely monitoring Waikato River levels in the city and what is happening on the coast. It will issue specific warnings as required.

Also, Civil Defence in Taupo, where lake levels are high, are preparing for forecast strong winds in case these result in more water being pushed on to shore.

In Hamilton, Environment Waikato yesterday activated a flood operations centre to monitor what is happening with the Waikato and Waipa rivers, which are both very full.

Current projections indicate the council’s flood management system will be able to handle projected river flows.

However, the centre is constantly monitoring rainfall and river level data in case the situation changes.

Mr Stent said authorities would let people know if they needed them to take any action.

“People living in areas prone to river flooding should pay attention to information in the media in case we need to issue any warnings for particular areas over the next few days.”
