HAMILTON

A terrified baker hid from a group of offenders who used a car to smash their way into a Hamilton supermarket early this morning to steal beer.

Senior Sergeant Kevin Anderson said Police were called to the Countdown Supermarket on Liverpool St shortly before 4am.

"The offenders had crashed their Nissan Maxima through a front awning and driven through the checkout area causing a fair amount of damage.

"As part of the group cleared debris from around the car others ran around grabbing boxes of beer while our terrified informant hid in fear of being discovered."

Though the offenders had already fled, Police arriving at the seen located property that led them to a Melville address where four adults ( two males and two females) aged between 17-20 were arrested along with a 16-year-old male, one of whom was found hiding in a wardrobe.

"We're currently reviewing CCTV footage to determine if any more people were involved and officers will be carrying out searches of other properties this morning."
