Mercury Bay sports complex gets final signoff

 

First fields expected to be ready for daylight play next winter.

Work will start almost immediately on the long-awaited Mercury Bay Multi-Sports Complex on a 10 hectare site at Whitianga Waterways. This  follows the signing of a new Development Contributions Deed between  the Thames-Coromandel District Council and Whitianga Waterways Ltd.  The new Deed replaces the Reserve Contributions Deed that was previously in place between the two parties.

Council had previously been investigating the option of developing the Multi-sport complex on a site in Moewai Road. The new Agreement between the parties will allow construction of the Multi- sports complex to proceed more quickly and will also avoid a number of the risks associated with the Moewai Road site said TCDC Chief Executive Steve Ruru.

A contract is also about to be signed with Hopper Construction to complete stage one of the $6 million project. By combining the sports field development works with site preparation work that Whitianga Waterways need to complete the overall costs to Council have been reduced by an estimated $700,000.

The project is expected to take three years to complete and will include:

·               Four rugby fields with two overlay cricket pitches;

·               One football field;

·               Six netball courts;

·               A hard stand area (3600m2) for future indoor stadium;

·               One building containing changing rooms and ablutions; and

·               Car parking for 150 vehicles.
