A man has been arrested and charged with theft following the disappearance of more than 40 bronze plaques from Whenua Tapu Cemetery.

Constable Damian Parker of the Porirua Police Burglary Squad says Police have spent several weeks investigating the theft of more than 40 bronze plaques, which occurred between the 29th of July and the 30th of August 2010.

"A 33 year-old man from Lower Hutt has been arrested, following valuable information we received from members of the public."

Constable Parker says Police now need to hear from the families of the deceased, whose plaques were stolen from Whenua Tapu. This will help Police complete their investigations.

"Families are urged to contact Sergeant Steve McCormack at the Porirua Police Station as soon as possible on (04) 238 1400."
