CANTERBURY

On Sat 8th Sept at about 2000 hrs four 15 year old girls were travelling by car from Lincoln towards Springston, apparently to take one of the girls home.

About 100 meters west of Shands road on Ellesmere Junction Road the driver lost control of the car and hit a power pole.

The back right seat passenger was killed instantly. The driver of the car died later in hospital.

Late this morning, the 10th September, a third passenger died in the Intensive Care Unit at Christchurch Hospital. Her name has been released by the Christchurch Public Hospital.

The fourth passenger received minor injuries.

At this stage of the investigation we can say that alcohol was not a factor. From initial scene examination it appears that excessive speed was also not a factor. Inquiries are continuing by Selwyn Police to establish the cause of the crash.

The matter will be forwarded to the Coroner for Inquest in due course.

Any one who witnessed the crash or who arrived shortly afterwards are requested to contact Constable Graeme BUTCHER of the Selwyn Police. Phone 363 7400 and ask for him.

Names of the deceased have been released to the media.

The Lincoln High School where the girls attended have instigated the School Trauma Policy.
