Calling all owners of broken down bikes!

This Sunday (10 October) the Big Bike Fix-up is being held at New Plymouth’s Wind Wand Car Park, for free mechanical diagnosis and basic repairs.

“In garages all around the district are bikes with broken spokes, loose chains, dodgy brakes and flat tyres that just need a little work to get them road-worthy again,” says NPDC Sustainable Transport Coordinator Nathaniel Benefield.

“We’ll provide basic parts and labour for free to fix the bikes – and if there are any repairs that are greater than what we can do on the day, we’ll provide a $20 voucher to a local bike repair shop to help you get the job done.

“The Big Bike Fix-up is a great chance to blow the dust off your bicycle and make it safe to use on our roads and pathways.”

The fix-up will run from 10am to 2pm and will include workshops on how to fix your bike, bike maintenance tips, helmet checks, and bike skills classes run by regular people for regular people.

The repairs will be undertaken by O2 Project, Mitchell Cycles, Cycle Inn and volunteers.

Mr Benefield says NPDC wants to make it as easy as possible for people to leave their cars at home for leisure or commuting trips.

“If we can help with bike repairs, then we’ve taken a step towards getting more people onto their bikes as the summer season gets near,” he says.
