Glenn Anderson produced the perfect captain's knock for the New Zealand surf lifesaving team at the world championships in Egypt today.

After a difficult opening session at the Moubarak Military Pool in Alexandria, the 30-year-old veteran produced a record-breaking swim to win gold in the 200m super lifesaver, heading home Germany's Marcel Hassemeier.

Anderson's time of 2mins 10.55secs was not only a national record, it was a timely boost to his team who came storming back.

"We had a DQ and a couple of frustrations in the morning and I could feel the team needed something to happen," a jubilant Anderson said. "I gave this swim everything and I'm stoked it had the desired effect - we really made a statement in the afternoon."

New Zealand finished the day third overall on 151 points, behind Germany's 217 and Italy on 199, with arch-rivals Australia 28 points back on 123 after a difficult day for the defending champions.

Anderson picked up the sole gold medal for the Kiwis but Titahi Bay pool specialist Steve Kent grabbed silvers in the 100m rescue medley and the 100m manikin carry with fins, setting national records in both.

Wellington teenager Samantha Lee had an outstanding race in the 100m rescue medley, winning bronze behind Italians Chiana Pidello and Erica Buratto, while Julia Toomey took silver in the 100m manikin carry with fins behind Aline Hundt (Germany).

New Zealand also have a silver medal pending in the men's 4x25m medley relay but that won't be confirmed until tomorrow, when the Australian team - having suffered gear failure in the final - complete a time-trial..

All teams have another day in the pool before heading to Alexandria's Mamoura Beach for two days of beach events.
