Nick White Last Kiwi Men’s Surfer To Fall At World Games

Nick White (Mnt) was the fourth and final Kiwi in the Open Men’s Division to fall for the Quiksilver New Zealand Surfing Team today (Monday 25th October). White finished equal 29th overall at the 2010 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games being held at Punta Hermosa, Peru.

White was confronted with the big task of beating the two South African’s in his heat – Warwick Wright and Chad Du Toit. Getting off to a slow start did not help White as the South Africans racked up the high scores pushing White into fourth place along with the Mexican surfer who placed third in the heat with scores of 7.20 and 10.7 respectively.

White will ponder what might have been after earlier in the day showing some exceptional form to place second in a high scoring fourth round heat progressing behind Carlos Munoz (CRC). White posted scores of 7.60 and 5.10 for a 12.80 point heat total eliminating Guillermo Satt (CHL) and Mario Lopez (SPA).

White’s loss spells the end for the four Kiwi Open Men’s Division surfers who struggled to find their best form on the often unpredictable point break set ups of Punta Hermosa.

The attention now swings to the Open Women’s Division surfers Paige Hareb (Tara) and Laura Rishworth (Mnt) along with longboarders Thomas Kibblewhite (Auck) and Daniel Procter (Gis) who all remain in the qualifying rounds of the event.

Thomas Kibblewhite (Auck) and Daniel Procter (Gis) stayed alive in the qualifying rounds today both placing second in their heats and both to the highly fancied Australian surfers. The results push the two surfers through to the last 16 surfers in the qualifying rounds and a big opportunity to jump to a career best result at the event should they move through their next heats.

Kibblewhite posted 9.70 out of a possible 20 points to push surfers from Costa Rica and Mexico into the repechage rounds. While Harley Ingleby (AUS) ran away with the heat scoring a 15.67 heat total, Kibblewhite had to settle for medium scores of 5.5 and 4.20 for his top two rides.

Kibblewhite now faces 2009 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games Longboard Champion Antoine Delpero (FRA), Jean Tahutini (TAH) and Matthew Moir (ZAF) in his third round match up that is likely to take place tomorrow (Tuesday 26th October NZ time).

Procter also surfed to a low scoring heat total of 10 points out of a possible 20 placing second behind Australia’s Josh Constable.

Procter will face Benoit Clemete (PER), Heifara Tahutini (TAH) and Remi Arauzo (FRA) hoping to improve on his performance after finding the conditions challenging today.

“We struggled today with the rip and the current running around the point” commented Procter who was disappointed with his personal performance despite progressing. “But nonetheless us longboarders are through despite losing Nick and Luke today” reflected Procter on the fifth day of action.

Luke Hughes (Raglan) struggled to find his feet on the righthanders at the Caballeros. A down-and-out Hughes said he slipped off his board several times throughout his 20 minute heat and was unable to link his turns together.

Hughes ultimately needed a 7.51 point ride to progress with the surfers from Peru and Mexico eventually running away with the heat. Hughes finished 33rd equal overall which is a big improvement from his 65th placing that he achieved at the event in 2009 when the event was contested in Costa Rica.

Yesterday (Sunday 24th October) saw New Zealand lose it’s first two surfers with Keone Campbell (Tara) and Morehu Roberts (Gis) finishing third in their repechage match ups placing 49th equal.

Campbell required a 4.9 point ride to progress but scored a 4.3 point ride on his last wave to fall just short of progression. Roberts was in a similar boat to Campbell. He opened his heat with a 5.67 point ride and looked comfortable in the solid waves. Requiring an average 4.80 point ride in the dying stages of his heat, he caught a great looking wave but after completing a good first turn he cut back and got caught in the whitewash and fell, extinguishing any hope of progressing further in the event.

Tomorrow will see the girls get their campaign back underway after three days of watching on the sidelines. This will mean Paige Hareb (Tara) and Laura Rishworth will be back in action along with the two longboarders.

A massive swell has pummeled the Peruvian coastline for the past three days forcing the event to run only one of the two podiums on offer for two days.

The Billabong ISA World Surfing Games run from the 19th – 27th of October and the event sees over 200 competitors from 31 nations competing for their national colours.

The 2010 Billabong ISA World Surfing Games uses a double elimination format meaning that all surfers have to place third or fourth in their heats twice, before being entirely eliminated from the event.

The team is looking to improve on the eleventh placing in 2009 when the event was held in Costa Rica.
