A 48 year old man received gunshot wounds after an incident on the forecourt of a service station in WAIROA.

The man had stopped to fuel his vehicle when he was approached by another person who fired two shots which struck the victim in the side and back.

The offender then ran off.

The victim was treated at the scene by local ambulance before being transferred to Hastings Hospital by rescue helicopter.

He is currently undergoing surgery and is described as being in a serious condition.
