Want to give the perfect Christmas gift this festive season? SKYCITY is here to help you.

In the lead up to Christmas, SKYCITY is seeking nominations for a deserving person to receive the perfect Christmas gift to the value of $10,000!

Nominations are now open on the SKYCITY Facebook page (called ‘SKYCITY Auckland’), or an entry form into a drop box in the SKYCITY Auckland Atrium or via post. Full details and terms and conditions are available on the SKYCITY Facebook page. The name of the tab on Facebook is called ‘Christmas’.

Nominators have until mid-day on Thursday 2 December to write 250 words about why their candidate deserves a Christmas wish and what that wish would be.

SKYCITY CEO, Nigel Morrison; Herald on Sunday editor, Bryce Johns; TVNZ Breakfast’s Pippa Wetzell and one judge yet to be announced will be making the big call with the winner to be told the good news on 9 December in time for Christmas!

Adding to the excitement; SKYCITY has hung a brand new Mercedes-Benz C200 CGI Sport Edition on the side of the Sky Tower 90M off the ground in the run up to the festive season which can be won in another on-site promotion! Keeping it festive, the car is the ‘stem’ of a giant Christmas tree wall papered to the tower.

And as always, SKYCITY is celebrating in style with the usual Christmas decorations and more this festive season. As well as the giant Charismas tree in the Atrium, there will be an all new, full colour laser light show every night from 8 November to 12 December on the side of the Sky Tower.

Interesting facts and figures:

Christmas tree sticker on the side of the Sky Tower:

  • 20m high x 4m wide
  • Nearly 90 individual pieces of vinyl
  • Could only be installed in 0-5kph winds
  • Installed by the SKYCITY Building Maintenance Unit and specially trained team of six abseilers who must stick each individual piece, dropping down the tower in unison
  • As the tower is made of self cleaning concrete, special stickers must be used, so no residue is left
  • The base of the sticker is 90m off the ground

Mercedes Benz hanging off the tower/ getting it up there with the biggest crane in New Zealand:

  • Brand new Mercedes-Benz C200 CGI Sport Edition will be 90M off the ground
  • Car weighs 1.5 ton
  • The car is worth over $75,000
  • Installed on 4 x 24mm diameter bolts which are currently fixed 500mm deep into the side of the tower; these are attached to a support frame which is connected to the underside of the car
  • Winds needed to be less that 15kph for the install, rigging team was on ropes to secure the frame to the bolts on the tower
  • Crane was 300 ton and needs six people onsite for the install
  • Crane arrived on Labour weekend and was tested by Auckland Cranes
  • Crane has 80 meters main boom, 21 m fly jib; first time in the Southern hemisphere a mobile crane has had 80m of boom
  • A large part of Federal Street was closed off for the installation of the car

Christmas laser light show & Christmas tree in the SKYCITY Atrium:

  •  The state of the art laser light show will be on both sides of the Sky Tower
