WELLINGTON CITY

Wellington Police are experiencing a spike in burglaries, particularly in the Newtown, Mount Cook, Mount Victoria and Karori suburbs.

Detective Senior Sergeant Donna Howard of Wellington CIB says Police have been making progress in identifying and prosecuting persons connected to some of these crimes.

"However, analysis of burglaries committed during the month of October has revealed that in over half of these cases, the home targeted by a burglar had been left insecure during daylight hours."

Detective Senior Sergeant Howard says as we head into the summer months there can be a tendency for residents to leave windows or doors unsecured or open to ventilate and cool their homes.

"Police remind residents that maintaining security deters opportunistic burglars and helps to protect their property and belongings against damage and theft."

She says paying particular attention to closing and locking ground level doors and windows whilst away from your home will significantly reduce the risk of burglary. Giving the impression your residence is occupied and working with neighbours to keep your property safe are also excellent steps in reducing the risk.

Residents are encouraged to contact Police immediately on 111 if they observe suspicious activity in their local area.
