The annual Welly Awards were held last week at the Town Hall with science champion Dr Gillian Turner taking out the education category.

The education category, awarded in association with Wellington City Council, celebrates those individuals who have made education their life's mission.

Physicist Dr Gillian Turner has an infectious passion for science, which reflects her own enthusiasm for learning and research and overflows to everyone she interacts with. She has inspired generations of young scientists through her work with science fairs, teaching, student advice and outreach at Victoria University. This year saw the publication of her new book, North Pole South Pole: The Epic Quest to Solve the Great Mystery of Earth's Magnetism, where she takes her reader on an adventure through the history of science.

Other education category nominees were Roger Moses, Wellington College Headmaster and Ruth McDavitt, Technology Internship Programme Coordinator and Enterprise Development Specialist at Grow Wellington.

This year is the 22nd Wellingtonian of the Year Awards, now endearingly known as The Wellys, with former City Councillor Ruth Gotlieb taking out the overall Wellingtonian of the Year Award.
