TE ANAU

At about 10.00 pm on Friday 3 December 2010 police were alerted to a single vehicle crash on the Te Anau - Manapouri highway (State Highway 95).

Members of the public came across the crash where a Daihatsu Charade vehicle had crossed the centre line, hit a bank and rolled. The female driver who was the sole occupant in the vehicle had been ejected and was found on the roadside nearby.

Efforts were made to resuscitate the woman by those in attendance and by trained medical staff; however it is believed she was killed instantly.

The highway was closed for approximately 4 hours while emergency services were in attendance and carried out preliminary scene examinations.

The deceased has been named as 23 year old Lorena EIRALDI HERNANDEZ of Uruguay. Her immediate family in Uruguay have been advised of her death.

It is believed that EIRALDI HERNANDEZ was travelling around New Zealand on a working holiday.

The circumstances as to the cause of the crash are being investigated including whether or not alcohol was a factor in the crash. Police specialist crash investigators have been working at the scene today. It will be some time before the full details of the crash are known.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.
