Fire Authorities Watching Weather

Fire authorities in Hastings District are trying to avoid imposing a fire ban this year, but Rural Fire officers say it will depend on how dry vegetation becomes over the next few days.

 

Deputy Principal Rural Fire Officer, Paul Hawke, says many areas are starting to dry out at present which will cause a considerable risk of fire. 

 

“Warmer weather accompanied with strong north westerly winds are starting to evaporate moisture from plants and there has already been several fires caused by carelessly discarded cigarette butts,” Mr Hawke says.

 

“Vegetation on the plains and in coastal areas is starting to become very dry, which means anyone lighting rubbish, cooking or other fires outdoor must take care to ensure fires do not get out of control”.

 

Mr Hawke says fire officers are keeping a close eye on fire danger conditions and will impose fire bans in coming weeks if vegetation becomes too dry.

 

People also need to take care for their own safety.
