ANSWD website and Discussions – ANSWD pae tukutuku/matapakinga
The website is going to expire. A NDCO has said yes to funding another website for 2 years. Craig Curtis the other convenor is currently working on the website. He has found a host called “ crazy domains” and he has also created a forum on the website http://answd.org/Fourm/index.php where we will be able to have discussions and not have 1000 emails sent. I am hoping that Craig will email through soon the details of the website and we will be able to start using the forum. If anyone has any suggestions of what they would like to have on the website etc please let us know immediately. Craig has quite a good knowledge of IT . Te pae tukutuku e monehu. I am more than happy to give you admin to the facebook group if you would like to help build it up. Not everyone uses facebook . I am hoping once the new website is created we will be able to use the forum and facebook for discussions. To install HumanWare Companion, download the executable (EXE) file from the above link and run this file. If you are installing for the first time, the HumanWare Companion Installation procedure will ask you to select from a list of available languages and ask you to accept the license agreement. You will also be asked if you want a Complete or Custom installation. Select "Complete" to install for the Stream. If you are using the ClassMate Reader you may select "Custom" to allow you to customize the Companion for that player. However, after installation you also have the ability to change either the language or player choices using the Options item of the Companion Tools menu. After installing, you can run the program by selecting the HumanWare Companion icon on your desktop.

The HumanWare Companion is optional software to support the Stream or the ClassMate Reader. There is no need to install this software unless you need its functionality. The features and changes for the new version are listed below.

New Features
• The Companion interface will now allow us to add Eastern European and Asian languages in the future.
• Check for HumanWare Companion Update: This is a new Help menu item you can use to check if your Companion software is up to date. If it is not up to date you can activate the Install New Version button to download and install the latest version.
• Check for Stream Update: This new Help menu item will check if your Stream player software is up to date. Connect your Stream to your computer or insert your Stream SD card into your computer’s SD slot. Then launch the Companion and select "Check for Stream Update" on the Help menu. A dialog will appear and display your current Stream version. If your Stream is not up to date, activate the Install New Version button to download the latest software and transfer it to your Stream SD card. Then put the card back in your Stream, power it on, and the new software will be installed. Please note: For the current Stream version 3.2 software (or earlier) the Companion will indicate that the Stream version is unknown. However, you may still use this new feature of Companion to update your Stream when HumanWare releases the next Stream version.
• Auto Detect DAISY CD: If you have the Companion Talking Books window open and then insert a DAISY CD, the Companion will automatically show the list of titles on that CD. You can then select the books you want to transfer from the CD. When finished transferring, just eject the CD and Companion will return to the previous list of books on your computer.
• Search Other Locations: If the Talking Books location on your PC has no books, Companion will offer to search in other locations. If you activate the Search button, Companion will look for Talking Books in these 3 folders: My Documents, then Downloads, then desktop. The first of these 3 folders that has a book will be set as your default folder.
• Transfer Authorization Files (KXO): If you receive a KXO authorization file on your computer you can use this new Tools Menu item to transfer the KXO book authorization file to the root of your SD card.
• Convert DOC files: If your MS Word program is older than version 11 (Office 2003) then the Companion will transfer Word documents as txt files because it is unable to transfer as html for these older versions of Word. If you have Word 2003 or later then Word DOC files will transfer as html files.

PC Files Locations: The PC Files locations you currently have set for each bookshelf on the Transfer menu will be carried forward into this new version of Companion. You will not need to reset the paths after installation.

The Cisco Academy for the Vision Impaired enables blind students to enter the world of Information technology. We provide Diagram descriptions, audio lab recordings, live online lectures by blind and vision impaired instructors, and a community of students and instructors to network with even after you have graduated our courses.

The academy is currently taking applications for the first semester of 2011. We Will be offering IT Essentials 1, Discovery 1 and Exploration 1 starting the first week of February.

ITE1 is an introduction to PC repair including: Hardware, installing and maintaining an operating system, Troubleshooting, portable devices, and customer service.

Exploration is a more in depth look at networking, both theoretical and practical for those students who wish to really get their hands into building and designing networks.

Each class runs for a total of six months, with online lectures. The classes are self-paced so you can finish them in a month, or take the entire semester if desired. The cost for each course is 500 US dollars however, scholarships are available to students who are paying out of pocket that lower the price to $150. Students are required to have good internet access skills and be familiar with their screen reader of choice, or be willing to teach themselves the necessary skills as we go along. Students should be familiar with reading Adobe PDF documents, as they may be encountered while doing research projects. We do not teach basic computer skills. Course content is online, so abroadband internet connection is highly recommended. Students should also have a working headset/microphone and be willing to install skype and Ventrilo, in order to attend lectures and communicate with instructors. Applications will be accepted until 28 January 2011.

ANZCA is a professional association for researchers and teachers in the multiple diverse fields of communication. Research students are encouraged and supported to take advantage of formal and informal mentoring opportunities afforded by participation in the conference and other activities of the association.

To open and extend discussion, the stream encourages submissions based on a broad range of interpretations, provocations, critique, reflection, narrative and conversation that explore the ways that disability and communication intersect with gender, sex and sexualities, ‘race’ and ethnicity, Indigeneity, ‘class’, socio-economic status, age, affect, health, space/place and culture.
