Vexatious Letter wastes hours of Police time

Police investigating the Scott Guy Homicide in Feilding have identified the author of a vexatious letter sent to the Guy family post box in September.

Scott Grahame Guy was shot and killed in his driveway in the early hours of the 8th July 2010. Following on from the shooting, hundreds of condolence letters were sent to the Guy family post box in Feilding.

On the 27th September Scott's father Bryan Guy handed a letter to Kylee that had been received via their post box. The letter contained a vexatious message causing Police to investigate the letter in relation to the murder.

The investigation Team commenced a new phase in the homicide tracking the letter and the stamp to try and identify the sender. This dedicated investigation took considerable resource away from the Homicide investigation spending well over 6 weeks tracking the stamps and the envelope.

On the 21st December (Scotts birthday) Police interviewed a 41 year old Hastings man in relation to writing and sending the letter. He is not a suspect for the murder. Police will not be releasing the content or circumstances surrounding the letter.

The man is likely to face a charge of 'Wasting Police time' in relation to the vexatious nature of this letter and the Police investment in time taken to investigate this unrelated matter. The man is not related to the family and it is not believed that he knew Scott.

Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger, head of the homicide investigation team, says while this is not the breakthrough police are looking for it is however a positive result to very painstaking work.

"This letter caused considerable heart break, pain and increased fear to a family already suffering. The actions of people who do this have little idea of what trauma they cause to others. Not only have they caused this pain to the family they have diverted considerable resource away from a very important investigation.

"I would also like to send a clear message that this behaviour will not be tolerated."

Detective Inspector Schwalger says that police received two phone calls last weekend following Kylee Guy's reiterated plea for the person responsible for Scott's death to confess. Both calls related to puppies but neither has advanced the investigation.

"If you are still holding on to some information about Scott's death or are waiting for someone else to come forward, please don't wait. Now is the time to make the call."
