Car crashes after police pursuit abandoned - Southern Motorway Market Road

At approximately 1250am this morning a fleeing vehicle failed to stop for police in Auckland City.

The vehicle was on Karangahape Road and entered the Southern Motorway.

The vehicle reached an unacceptable speed and the chase was abandoned by police.

The fleeing vehicle was located further up the motorway near the market road off ramp where it had hit a power pole.

One of the occupants is deceased and one other is in a serious condition.

The motorway has been closed to South Bound traffic at Gillies Avenue.

The Independant Police Complaints Authority will be notified of the incident.

At this stage this crash brings the road toll to 12 for the holiday period.
