Police release name of missing diver off Titahi Bay beach

Police are now able to release the name of the 49 year old diver, missing since last night near Titahi Bay beach.

He is Colin Smithies of Wellington.

More than 40 searchers are continuing to look for Mr Smithies in an area between Rocky Point in the south to Pukerua Bay, and out to Mana Island.

The search will continue until nightfall and will resume at first light tomorrow morning, with planning continuing throughout the night.

The search involves Land SAR, Coastguard, Paekakariki Surf Lifesaving Club, the Westpac Rescue helicopter and Coastguard Air Patrol. Wellington Police Maritime Unit, a component of the National Police Dive Squad, and other Police on the ground are also involved in the search.

Police want to hear of any sightings of Mr Smithies from any boaties or other water users, between Paekakariki and Titahi Bay. Anyone with information should contact the Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000.
