Wellington Police investigating a stabbing outside the Bay Road shops in Kilbirnie earlier this week are looking for a Good Samaritan who intervened in the incident.

A 46 year old male was stabbed in the chest and back areas around 2:30pm on Tuesday 25 January 2011. He has since been discharged from Wellington Hospital.

Detective Sergeant Mike Priston of the Wellington City CIB says the Good Samaritan was heroic in his actions, which prevented the victim from receiving any further stab wounds, and Police would like to find him as they continue investigating the incident.

The witness is described as a tall Maori or Pacific Island man of solid build. He was wearing shorts with work boots, and a light coloured unzipped hooded sweatshirt.

"After the incident the man walked away from the scene, before attending officers were able to speak to him. We're very keen to talk to him to help us with our ongoing enquiries into the matter and urge him to contact us here at the Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000."

A 64 year old man has appeared in Court charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
