Invercargill City Council Mayor Tim Shadbolt and CEO Richard King fly to Japan this weekend to attend the Memorial Service of one of the key figures in Invercargill’s long-term sister city relationship.

Mr Hirozumi Yagihashi was one of Kumagaya’s most prominent businessmen running the city’s iconic Yagihashi Department Store.

He also for many years was President of the Kumagaya International Friendship Association (KIFA) and was a member of the Kumagaya Senior Chamber of Commerce.

“It was through his encouragement that brought the recent visit to Invercargill in December of a delegation of five businessmen to further deepen business links between our two cities,” Mr King said.

On behalf of the people of Invercargill City, the Deputy Mayor, Councillors and staff, we will formally pass on our deepest condolences on the passing of Mr Yagihashi.

Mr Yagihashi was a great friend to Invercargill and we were shocked and saddened by his passing,” Mr King said.

Mr King said Mr Yagihashi was held in very high regard in Kumagaya and in Invercargill has touched the lives of many citizens – particularly the many high school students who have undertaken cultural experiences supported by the KIFA.

“I am in no doubt that it is his personal championship for our sister city relationship, his unfailing loyalty and support that has made the relationship between our two cities lasting and strong.”
