The peak has past but about 50 people displaced by flooding in the Far North are still being assisted at temporary welfare centres at Kerikeri, Kawakawa, Kaeo and Haruru Falls.

However the numbers are slowly falling as flood levels continue to drop and people are either able to return to their homes or have since found alternate accommodation.

In the Kaitaia area, the Awanui River and Tarawhataroa Stream are still being closely monitored. Three houses have been evacuated in Parkdale Crescent.

Civil Defence teams and roading and services contractors have been on the roads throughout the district assessing damage and the status of flood levels. This assessment and monitoring work will continue through the day.

Sucker tankers have been called to the Paihia area to prevent further spills from sewage pump stations damaged at the peak of the flooding earlier today. This will continue until replacement pumps can be transported north from Auckland.
