Police in Marton are appealing for information after cigarettes and tobacco worth around $10,000 was stolen during a ram raid on a service station.

The raid happened around 2am yesterday (Monday, 31 January) when thieves drove a stolen light truck through a roller door at the rear of the Shell service station on Broadway, Marton.

The robbers then took cigarettes and tobacco before driving from the premises and abandoning the vehicle about 400m away on Calico Line.

It's not clear whether the robbers then fled from Calico Line on foot or left in a second vehicle.

Police are particularly keen for information about the cigarettes and tobacco being sold on. They also want to hear from any witnesses to the ram raid, the abandoning of the vehicle on Calico Line, or any suspicious activity in the area in the days leading up to the robbery.

The truck, which had been stolen earlier in the evening from the Marton area, is described as a light open-backed truck with a white cab and light grey body. There were at least two offenders and for investigative reasons descriptions are not being released at this stage.

House to house enquiries have been completed and Police are trawling security footage as part of the investigation.

Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact Detective James Middleton at Marton Police on 06 327 6555. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
