Mountain Buggy stamped as Clever Kiwi Invention

Mountain Buggy®, a relatively recent invention, has become one of New Zealand’s most popular and respected pushchair brands in the world wide juvenile market today. In recognition of the success of New Zealand’s original buggy which is still made in New Zealand, New Zealand Post has selected Mountain Buggy® to be represented on a stamp in celebration of "Clever Kiwi’’ inventions.


The Mountain Buggy® story began in 1992. The need for a pushchair that could be used by parents with a fitness-orientated lifestyle gave rise to an opportunity to create a new breed of buggies. In the sense of true kiwi ingenuity a group of fitness oriented parents, decided that they would solve this problem. The aim was to design a pushchair that could go off road in all different terrains without compromising the safety of the child. Together the parents invented the very first Mountain Buggy®, the Terrain.


The Mountain Buggy® design surpassed its inventor’s expectations and soon became the buggy most recommended by New Zealand mums. Its sturdy construction, lightweight frame, ease of use and manoeuvrability provide many advantages over the traditional pushchair. It did not take long for the world to learn of the buggy that would allow them to take their child anywhere and everywhere with them. The humble kiwi invention has become an international success.


Jesse Muru Paenga, co-inventor and Company Director of Mountain Buggy® was overwhelmed with the buggy’s early success saying, ``Our initial target market was parents who ran up hills and off road, we had no idea that in creating this product we would be giving all parents, whatever their lifestyle the opportunity to take their child anywhere’’.
