PALMERSTON NORTH

John McIntyre, a two-time NZV8 champion, has secured third position on the starting grid for the first of three races for the fifth round of the BNT V8s Championship at Manfeild.

“Today’s qualifying worked out well for us,” says McIntyre.

McIntyre’s flying lap time of 1:13.002 was just 0.116 seconds off second-placed Tim Edgell with Kayne Scott taking pole position this weekend.

“We’ve got the inside line which is very important going into Manfeild’s opening right-handed sweeper, and almost more importantly in terms of the opportunity to earn points is that Craig Baird is behind us and Angus Fogg is even further back on the grid tomorrow,” says the Nelson-based driver.

Fogg had the championship lead coming into this Manfeild round with 713 points, from Baird with 657 points and McIntyre with 608 points. Fogg didn’t make the top ten shootout and McIntyre piloted the Amcor Falcon around Manfeild’s 3.03km circuit fractionally faster than Baird.

“I’m very happy with the car’s pace and I’m focused on making a very strong start tomorrow. The whole team at John McIntyre Racing is looking forward to a great day’s racing and we’ll be doing our best to get a points’ advantage over Angus and Craig without letting Kayne away with gaining any advantage over us.”

Sunday’s races see John McIntyre Racing and the #47 Amcor Falcon on track for a 12-lap race at 10:35am, a second 12-lap race at 12:45pm and the third, reverse grid race of 22 laps at 4:15pm.
