WAIROA Police were kept busy with a spate of violent offences over the weekend

At 1145pm on Saturday 12 February 2011, 3 men were set upon by a group outside a local sports club. As a result an 18yr old local man was admitted to hospital with serious facial injuries. He has since been transferred to TARANAKI Hospital for treatment. His two companions aged 18 and 20yrs received moderate facial injuries in the attack. They were both treated at WAIROA Hospital and discharged.

Police are following positive lines of enquiry.

At the same time a 30 year old female was struck in the face with a bottle while attending a 21st birthday. She received a cut to her right eye and was taken to WAIROA Hospital by family for treatment before being discharged. Her attacker is known and enquiries are being made to locate this person.

At 8.30am on Sunday 13 February 2011 the occupants of neighbouring addresses on Apatu Street WAIROA were involved in a dispute. One of the men has obtained a firearm and fired two shots at the other man striking him in the upper arm and face. The offender has then left the area.

The victim a 42 yr old local man was taken to hospital by associates and was then transferred to HASTINGS Hospital for further treatment.

His injuries are described as serious but not life threatening.

The Armed Offenders Squad and CIB from GISBORNE are assisting WAIROA Police with enquiries into these incidents.
