A public recycling system for Rugby World Cup 2011 will get its first use at this Thursday’s More FM Winery Tour at Sentry Hill.

At each venue on the tour the audience is reminded how important it is to preserve the beautiful location and environment through recycling.

New Plymouth District Council has been working in partnership with the Glass Packaging Forum to promote recycling under the Love NZ brand as part of a nationwide $3 million public place recycling initiative, funded by local and central government and the forum, ahead of RWC 2011.

“We’re really glad to be able to provide this colour-coded system at Sentry Hill so that the public gets an early look at the approach we’ll be taking at Stadium Taranaki during Rugby World Cup 2011,” says Manager Venues and Rugby World Cup Jenny Mills.

“The key to this recycling system working well is for people to not leave their rubbish on the ground but to take it to the bins on their way out of the venue, and the colour coding make it easy for people to see which material goes in which bin.”

Ms Mills says the public response towards recycling at The Hollies concert at the Bowl earlier this month was amazing. “There was very little rubbish left on the ground with concert-goers taking the majority of their rubbish to the venue’s recycling centres.

“Bit by bit we’re seeing more people making the effort to get their rubbish to the recycling bins at major events. We’re aiming to get people into the habit of leaving venues in a pretty clean state after sports events and concerts.”

Ms Mill says a major effort to improve recycling at large events began with the Cliff Richards concert at the Bowl in February 2010, with the help of Team Clean, Eurest and waste and cleaning contractors.
