Public urged to help reduce traffic congestion
Police are asking for the public's help to reduce Christchurch traffic congestion, which is becoming an increasing problem for essential vehicles needing to move around the city.
Traffic on the eastern side of the city has been building since about 3pm and is currently gridlocked.
Canterbury District Commander Superintendent Dave Cliff is urging people to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
"We appreciate people need to move around but please try and keep it to the essentials. The traffic build-up we're experiencing at the moment is hindering emergency services and other essential vehicles.
"Cars also stir up the dust, making it very unpleasant for the residents in badly damaged areas.
"We would appreciate it if people could look for opportunities to work together to limit car use. If you need to go out for groceries, then try and organise a car pool with friends. If you need to check on someone, try the phone first.
"We would really appreciate everyone's cooperation," Mr Cliff says.
