A Wellington taxi driver remains in hospital today after being stabbed in Wilton in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Detective Sergeant Mike Priston of the Wellington CIB says the 60 year old taxi driver picked up a male passenger at a taxi rank in Kilbirnie near the intersection of Bay Road and Rongotai Road just after midnight, and drove him to Shropshire Avenue in Wilton.

"Once the taxi arrived at the destination, the male passenger stabbed the taxi driver in the chest and abdomen, before fleeing from the taxi."

The taxi driver remains in Wellington Hospital in a stable condition.

Police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the passenger getting into the taxi in Kilbirnie or anyone who may have witnessed the incident in Shrophire Ave.

Anyone with any information should contact the Wellington CIB Crime Squad on 04 381 2000 or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
