WHANGAMATA

Taranaki's East End club has taken a big overall points lead after the second day of surf lifesaving's IRB national championships in Whangamata on Saturday.

With a 44-strong team, East End was always expected to dominate the three-day carnival but they've already raced to a seemingly impregnable 20-point lead over Taranaki rivals Fitzroy.

Bolstered by world champions Andrew Cronin and James Morwood, who helped win the premier mass rescue final ahead of the club's second crew, East End are on 36 points with a day to go.

Fitzroy's five-time female champions Emma Crofskey and Katie Watt took out the women's mass rescue title, helping Fitzroy to 16 points, two ahead of Christchurch club Taylors Mistake.

The Christchurch contingent had a great day, especially in the under-21 mass rescue final, where Sumner led home Taylors Mistake and Sumner.

Sumner also finished third in the premier men's final, while Taylors Mistake grabbed third in the women's final.

The carnival finishes tomorrow with finals in assembly rescue, single rescue and teams race.
