Good news for Marfell cyclists: We want your bikes!

The Mighty Marfell Bike Fix-Up is being held this Sunday (10 April). Anyone with a bicycle is welcome to come along from 2pm-4pm to have their bike checked over by experts and have minor repairs done for free, and take part in games and activities.

“These fix-ups were extremely popular in Waitara and central New Plymouth, and now it’s Marfell’s turn,” says Sustainable Transport Coordinator Nathaniel Benefield.

“This is about getting Marfell cyclists back on the road on street-legal, safe and well-fitting bikes.

“We’ll have professional mechanics from Raceway Cycles and Mitchell Cycles to do bike adjustments and minor repairs, and there will be a ‘sell or swap meet’ for bikes as well.

“The New Plymouth Mountain Bikers Club is organising bike games and activities for the kids and there’ll be some cool spot prizes, music, coffees and a barbecue.”

The Mighty Marfell Bike Fix-Up at Marfell Community School is part of New Plymouth District Council’s Let’s Go programme. By providing minor bike repairs for free, the Council is aiming to see more people take to the streets on safer bicycles.

About 170 bicycles were seen at the Waitara Big Bike Fix-Up in February, and just over 200 at a bike fix-up on the Coastal Walkway in October last year.

In the week following this Sunday’s event, students at Marfell Community School will receive four days of cycle skills training to improve their riding techniques, build their confidence and help keep them safe while riding.

The Mighty Marfell Big Bike Fix-Up would not be possible without the support of volunteers from the New Plymouth Mountain Bikers Club, North Taranaki Cycle Advocates, Marfell Community School, Marfell Kindergarten, Marfell Combined Culture Trust and NPDC.
