You may have noticed quite a bit of road works activity around lower Trafalgar Street recently.

Council’s Manager Capital Projects Phil Hamblin says improving pedestrian safety and tidying the area in front of Trafalgar Park is a high priority, as we are less than 25 weeks away from kick off for Rugby World Cup 2011. He expects it all to be completed by mid April.

“Currently it’s very difficult to safely cross the road at the intersection of Grove Street, Hathaway Terrace and lower Trafalgar Street. By putting in road out builds on the corner of Grove and Trafalgar Streets, pedestrians get a clearer view of approaching traffic as well as being more visible to drivers.

He says the work covers the planned Heart of Nelson activities, general maintenance, and enhancements to better meet the needs of Rugby World Cup 2011.

Other improvements include installation of a new bus stop outside the Park and the resurfacing of the rest of lower Trafalgar Street up to the roundabout on Queen Elizabeth II Drive and Hathaway Terrace. A new footpath will be laid outside the fruit shop, along with proper kerb and channel, making a clearer demarcation of the footpath.

Recently, new asphalt was laid at the intersection of lower Trafalgar Street up to and across the Trafalgar Street Bridge deck, as part of the usual maintenance programme.

Phil says Council surveys all roads every two years and work is prioritised based on road usage.
