A 58 year old Australian woman has died from complications after coming into difficulties while snorkelling at Denham Bay, Raoul Island.

Susan Larter was a passenger on the New Zealand-registered adventure tourism boat, the 'Spirit of Enderby'. The boat is owned by Heritage Expeditions, a Christchurch-based company.

Western Bay of Plenty Police say it appears Ms Larter was snorkelling in calm conditions in a small supervised group when she indicated she was having difficulties. The ship's Doctor recommended a medical evacuation due to her condition, but she died while this was being arranged.

Ms Larter's husband was also a passenger on the Spirit of Enderby and he was by her side throughout.

Police say the Spirit of Enderby is due to return to the Port of Tauranga later this week. The death will be referred to the Coroner.

Raoul Island is approximately 1100 kilometres to the North-East of New Zealand. It is part of the Kermadec Island group.
