A competition seeking fresh ideas from the city’s young people for the design of a youth focussed park at Tahunanui Reserve kicked off yesterday.

The Nelson City Council and the Nelson Youth Council are launching the competition in a bid to ensure as many young people as possible get the opportunity to see their ideas transformed into reality.

The Tahunanui Youth Park replaces the skateboard half pipe, removed last year because of the increasing maintenance cost and limited use. The Park is included in the Tahunanui Reserve Management Plan.

Council’s Principal Adviser Reserves and Community Facilities Andrew Petheram, says we want the area to be a safe and interesting hang-out space that encourages physical activities, but also be where young people want to meet.

“The youth park will be designed to complement other recreational facilities in the reserve and to contribute positively to Nelson youth. We hope the competition generates plenty of input from youth and the general public”

“The Nelson Youth Council had the idea to run a competition to find out what young people want to see at the youth park and how they would like to use the space. The entries don’t have to be flash in their presentation. What we are looking for are ideas that are creative, that keep in mind safety, but at the same time involve physically challenging activities.”

He says families and the wider community will also be encouraged to comment on the entries, which will be posted to the Council website and Facebook. They will then be assessed by the Youth Council, after the competition closes on 13 May.

Posters, flyers and entry forms will be available throughout schools, the New Hub, Nelson City Council and the Nelson Public Libraries. Click to go to competition page to find out more and download entry forms.
