MT MAUNGANUI

At 1.11pm on 3rd of May 2011, Mount Maunganui Police were called to a industrial address on Totara Street, Mount Maunganui for a unexploded explosive device. This device was approximately 75cm long and in a rough condition.

The address and other neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution and a small detour was put in place. The New Zealand Defence Force was consulted and were in Mount Maunganui for an unrelated matter.

They attended the scene and after examination found the device to be a old training Air Force ordnance which contained a small amount of explosive material.

The NZDF removed the ordnance for destruction and the evacuation was lifted at 2.30pm

The Police wish to remind people who locate old ordnance to consider them dangerous until cleared by an authorised personal. If in doubt call the Police.
