HUNTLY

Police have identified the body of a man found on waste land near a railway track in Huntly earlier this week.

He was Wiremu Tamanui Awa, 48, of Huntly.

Mr Awa's body was found on a stretch of bare land in Shaw St, Huntly, on Tuesday. It is unknown how he died. Police are currently waiting on preliminary post mortem results to help determine the cause of death.

Detective Senior Sergeant Pete Jones said the investigation into Mr Awa's death was continuing, with police going door-to-door speaking to neighbours in the area where he was found.

There had been a lot of talk in the community about the death and Mr Jones urged anyone with information to come forward to police.

"We are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Awa over the last couple of weeks and it's important we trace his movements up until his death.

"We are working closely with Mr Awa's family and we need to get as much information as we can about how he died," Mr Jones said.

Police are unsure at this stage when Mr Awa died, but it appears it could have been some time ago.
