The Saxton Oval Pavilion, the new home for representative cricket, athletics and football at Saxton Field, is well on track to be available for training for the Rugby World Cup in September.

Following the RWC, the first major use of the complex will be for the South Island Masters Games in October.

Councillor Pete Rainey Joint Portfolio Holder Community Services says the complex represents the collaboration between the three sporting codes and the Nelson and Tasman District Councils.

“It’s really great to see the spirit of collaboration represented in the development of this outstanding facility. The iconic architectural design and construction has taken into account the shared nature of the facilities, and the particular needs of the three sporting codes. When we see this building on televised games in future we’ll know its Nelson.”

The Pavilion will primarily be used for cricket, athletics and football but will also be available for functions and meetings. The budget is $3.8m with 20% to be met by the major sporting code users. The building was designed by the Nelson firm Arthouse Architecture.
