Wellington on-licenses flout the Sale of Liquor Act

WELLINGTON CITY

Police are disappointed with Wellington city on-licenses who sold to underagers in a controlled purchase operation, as part of the Trans Tasman Operation Unite over the weekend.

Of the six on-licenses in Wellington city visited on Friday night, all six sold to a 16 year old male volunteer, accompanied by a 17 year old male volunteer.

Acting Wellington District Commander Inspector Richard Chambers says, "These results are disappointing and those who breached the Sale of Liquor Act will be referred to the Liquor Licensing Authority."

Police were out in force across the Wellington District on Friday and Saturday night as part of the alcohol harm reduction campaign Operation Unite.

Provisional Wellington District results show:

- 12 off-licences in Wellington city were visited, with one selling to a 16 year old volunteer.
- 10 on-licences in the Hutt Valley were visited, with one selling to a 16 year old volunteer.
- 9 on-licences in the Hutt Valley were visited, all complying with the Sale of Liquor Act.
- 8 drunk drivers were caught across the District on Friday night.
- 21 drunk drivers were caught across the District on Saturday night.
- 18 breaches of the Liquor Ban were detected across the District on Friday night.
- 75 breaches of the Liquor Ban were detected across the District on Saturday night.
