The first traffic intersection improvement in the Let’s Go programme has been completed.

A pedestrian phase has been installed at the busy Devon/Smart intersection, making it easier for residents in the Glen Avon suburb to cross safely to the Waiwhakaiho Valley shops.

“Before now the only safe pedestrian crossing in the area was the underpass at the Fitzroy traffic lights,” says Let’s Go Project Manager Carl Whittleston.

“Having this pedestrian phase will be particularly beneficial for people with limited mobility who need a safe, flat crossing point. As for drivers, the effect on traffic flow will be minimal.”

Mayor Harry Duynhoven says it’s great to see the NZ Transport Agency and the Council working together to improve pedestrian safety on a busy section of State Highway 3.

“Intersection improvements such as installing pedestrian phases are small developments that bring a lot of benefit to the community – and there are more on the way,” says the Mayor.

“Through the Let’s Go project there will be 10 more intersections and crossing points in the district that will be improved during the summer season, such as with kerb extensions or pedestrian refuges.

“If we can make intersections safer for pedestrians, we’ll make walking an easier choice for many people in the community.”

The Council is finalising the 10 intersection locations now, with sites being considered in New Plymouth, Oakura, Bell Block, Inglewood and Urenui.
