Dunedin Police would like to clarify comments in relation to the practice of Mexican waves, and say that they are not `banning' the practice at Rugby World Cup games at Dunedin's new stadium as has been reported.

Police say they are concerned about any behaviour that might endanger the safety of others.

"Our concern is about objects being thrown into the air that might compromise the safety of others. We do want people to enjoy themselves and have a good time within the bounds of the law, while being mindful of the safety of others around them," Inspector Alastair Dickie said.

There have been instances in the past where people have been injured as a result of objects thrown at any time during the match, Inspector Dickie said.
