The Queenstown Lakes District Council will submit on Remarkables Park Limited’s private plan change in order to help keep a perspective on the wider Frankton Flats area, QLDC chief executive Debra Lawson said.

The QLDC finance and corporate committee agreed on Tuesday to lodge a submission to Plan Change 34.

“Council needs to provide for integrated planning and development of the Frankton Flats area and it is likely it will take the same approach around a second private Plan Change 43 being submitted by Shotover Property Investments on land adjacent to the Impact Church,” Ms Lawson said. Plan Change 43 has yet to be considered by full Council.

Ensuring that the community had a voice on Frankton Flats development was critical for a number of reasons, including the future development of retail and the impact on existing retail at Frankton and in the Queenstown Central Business District.

“In my view Remarkables Park has delivered a quality development that has fulfilled community needs however Council wants to consider all future development at Frankton Flats in the context of a process that involves a good outcome for the entire area,’ Ms Lawson said.

The Council wanted to see development go ahead on the flats that contributed to the whole area and linked well with both existing and proposed development. Frankton Flats is already the subject of Plan Change 19 (Council plan change), the Eastern Arterial Road proposal, Plan Change 35 regarding the airport air noise boundary and a Notice of Requirement regarding an extension of the airport.

“As a Council we have a dedicated working party which considers all development matters around Frankton Flats. One of the key objectives of the group is to ensure Council continues to represent the overall community perspective,” Ms Lawson said.
