Commonwealth Games Medalists Win Title
Multi Commonwealth Games medallist Joelle King cruised to the women’s singles title at the Wellington Squash Open at Mitchell Park. King aged 22 and ranked 14 in the world easily completed a straight game victory over fellow Waikato player Emma Millar 11-5 11-1 11-8. Earlier in the semifinals King had defeated Eliza Sim(Wellington ) in straight games.
Men’s top seed and mixed silver medallist in Delhi (with King), Martin Knight won the men’s singles title in four games in a tough battle where he had to contend with some top player from second seed, Evan Williams(Wellington) and some time out for severe blisters on his feet.
After dropping the first game 7-11 Knight was able to come back to win the next three games 11-3 11-1 11-8 for the title.
In the semifinals Knight beat the super-fit Wellingtonian Josh King, also in four games.
Both Knight and King won the respective men’s and women’s singles titles at the recent Waikato Open as well.
