Nelson City Council will celebrate 100 days to go until Rugby World Cup 2011 on 1 June by launching a central business district competition in conjunction with the Nelson Weekly to build support for the four teams Nelson is hosting for the Tournament: Italy, USA, Australia, and Russia. Mayor Aldo Miccio says the competition will be a great opportunity for business to build excitement for the 20,000 international and domestic vistitors who are coming to Nelson.

“We’ve been planning for this Tournament for several years, and now it’s just a few months away. I can feel the excitement building when I’ve been out at community events or talking to business owners. This competition can be a catalyst for getting the CBD shops into the spirit of RWC 2011.”

Mayor Miccio says the CBD will be split into four quadrants and the Nelson Weekly will announce next week which quadrant has been asked to adopt which of the four teams.

“We want everyone to decorate their shop windows, restaurants, the entire store interior, because this is a competition for a great prize, sponsored by the Nelson Weekly.”

The details of the competition, including the prize going to the winning shop, will be featured in the 31 May edition of the Nelson Weekly.
