Waikato Civil Defence is urging people living in or visiting the Waikato region over Queen’s birthday weekend to keep a close eye on weather conditions.

It follows a severe weather warning from MetService for the Coromandel Peninsula, Kaimai Ranges and Lake Taupo, with heavy rain expected this weekend.

Duty emergency management officer Greg Ryan said heavy rain had the potential to make roads slippery, cause slips and surface flooding, and push up river levels.

“We strongly recommend people stay up to date with the latest weather and roading information to help them avoid hazards and have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.”

Mr Ryan said civil defence would be working closely with Waikato Regional Council, which will monitor rainfall and river levels around the region through the weekend, and provide advice on any potential rain or flood hazards.

“At this stage we’re expecting river systems to be able to cope with any heavy rain but will keep a close eye on the situation and provide warnings or advice as required.”
