Police in Feilding are investigating a suspicious fire at a marae in the nearby Halcombe township.

The fire occurred around 8am this morning at the marae situated between Halcombe Road and Hastings Street, approximately halfway into the township.

An initial investigation by fire safety officers into the cause of the fire indicates it may have been started deliberately.

The fire completely destroyed a kitchen and dining area at the marae. Thankfully the main meeting house survived the blaze.

Detective David Burmeister said: “It is an unusual time of the day for an arson attack. Although Halcombe is only a small township, it is situated on a fairly busy road and there would likely be a lot of people up and about, and traffic passing through.”

Police want to hear from anyone who saw any vehicles parked near the marae this morning or anyone running or acting suspiciously in the area.

Anyone with information relevant to this investigation is asked to contact Feilding Police on 06 323 6363. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
