Emergency services are winding up their operations at the site of yesterday's explosion in Onehunga.

District Commander for Auckland City, Superintendent George Fraser says “Gas levels at the site have remained low through the course of the day, enabling Police to complete their scene examination.”

“From 6pm this evening we will be handing over the site management role to Watercare and HEB so they can resume work on connecting the water pipeline.”

“Both the source of the gas and the cause of the explosion are still unclear and a Police investigation will be ongoing, in conjunction with the Department of Labour.”

“Police would like to thank the residents and shop owners of Onehunga for their cooperation and assistance over the last 36 hours.”
