Auckland Wins National Title

Top seeded team, Auckland won the national under19 badminton teams event being held in Dunedin by the narrowest of margins over defending champions North Harbour.

Auckland defeated North Harbour 6-5 with Victoria Cheng winning all three of her matches defeating Anona Pak in the singles in straight games and teaming with Carmen Yuen for the doubles for a hard-fought three game victory. In the mixed Cheng combined with Riga Oud to account for Evan Lee and Rayna Phillips 21-11 21-15.

In the men’s top singles match Auckland’s Sam Ho beat Evan Lee in straight games. North Harbour picked up its wins in the lower ranked matches.

In the playoff for third and fourth Waikato defeated Nelson 8-3. All competitors now take part in the individual championships which run from Monday – Wednesday this week at the Angus Badminton Hall in Dunedin.

Canterbury’s Asher Richardson is the top seed in the men’s singles followed by Ho from Auckland. Cheng(Auckland) and Pak(North Harbour) are the two top seeds in the women’s singles Madeleine Stapleton from the Waikato next.
