The news that Air New Zealand is launching standby fares to and from Christchurch has been warmly welcomed by Christchurch Airport. “Air New Zealand has always been a great supporter of Christchurch and this will be a great boost for travel to and from our city,” said CEO of Christchurch International Airport Ltd (CIAL), Jim Boult.

“We are the key gateway to the South Island, and strong passenger numbers in Christchurch always means a healthy tourism industry for the South Island,” he explained. “So we see these Air New Zealand standby fares as real assistance in bringing visitors back to the region.”

Air New Zealand offered standby airfares in the weeks following the severe earthquake in February 2011. “They were immensely popular then, and people were very grateful for ability to travel easily in and out of the city,” said Jim Boult. “Of course, now we want people to know that while the CBD is still out of bounds, the rest of the city is open, the region has many wonderful attractions, and the South Island is as amazing as ever.”

Jim Boult wants to send a message of encouragement to anyone wishing to visit the city, or to Christchurch residents who would like a short holiday away from the city. “These fares make travel possible for anyone, so make the decision, and take a trip soon! We have a great new terminal, which is nearly complete and we offer a free booking service for any accommodation, attractions or transport at our Travel & Tourism centres.”

The Air New Zealand standby airfares to and from Christchurch will be launched this weekend. Further details can be found on the Air New Zealand website.
