Grabaseat standby fares for Christchurch have now launched.

To celebrate, grabaseat held a crazy competition in Hagley Park, whereby Cantabrians were invited to come and stand on one leg in order to win the chance to grab a round the world ticket for two.

After more than four hours spent standing-by on one foot, Christchurch man Claude Meffan and a mate are now looking forward to a round the world trip for two flying Air New Zealand.

On Sunday 12 June 2011 the airline will launch Christchurch standby fares on direct services to and from Christchurch for spontaneous travel one way for just $59.

Air New Zealand Domestic Brand Manager, Mark Reeves, understands how tough Cantabrians have had it recently and believes there is no better place to launch the standby fares than Christchurch, with Saturday’s stunt proving the demand.

“The Great Grabaseat Standby event has given us the opportunity to interact with Cantabrians and offer them a really awesome prize for doing something silly, fun and light hearted like standing on one foot. The positive spirit of Cantabrians is reflected in the amount of people who came out to play on Saturday.

These standby fares will give an extra boost to the local economy by encouraging visitors to head to Christchurch, as well as giving locals a chance to get away for a bit,” said Reeves.

The standby fares are available to Air New Zealand’s one million Airpoints members on any non-stop off peak (10am – 3.30pm) domestic service to or from Christchurch. Anyone who’s not already an Airpoints member can sign up online for free until the end of July.
