At about 11.00pm on Thursday 27 September 2007, police attended a Fatal Motor vehicle in Buchanan's Road, on the outskirts of Christchurch.

A 38 year old man died at the scene after the motorcycle he was riding failed to stop at a controlled intersection and collided with a lamp-post.

No other vehicle was involved in the incident and the deceased man was the sole operator of the motorcycle.

Police staff, including from the Police Serious Crash Unit, attended and an investigation into the full circumstances has commenced.

Initial indications from witnesses suggest that speed and alcohol were likely to be factors in the collision, though enquiries in that regard are yet to be fully completed.

At this point the deceased identity has been withheld - pending the notification to family members.'
